Once you begin to truly understand how much God loves you, there is still another hole you may find lurking in your heart. You see, God created us ladies with a deep desire to be beautiful and for our beauty to be appreciated. For most of us, our enemy, the father of lies, has twisted this desire to let us know that we fall short of the standard of beauty. Due to our deep desire to be beautiful, we begin striving to meet this standard of beauty. The catch is that the standard is always shifting to be sure that we never reach it. It doesn’t matter the color of your hair, the size of your dress, the length of your legs, the straightness of your teeth, it never meets the standard.
You never meet the standard.
Here’s the good news – the standard is a lie.
Ok, go with me here. Take out your phone and open up the camera. (Seriously, get out your phone.) Now, turn the camera to “selfie” angle and point it at your face. Do you see the woman on your screen? That is who God calls beautiful. You are who he says is the model of perfection. You see, God is an incredible artist and he is unable to make replicas of his art. So each piece he creates is a completely, unique, priceless masterpiece.
You are a masterpiece.
Paul write in Ephesians 2:21 that “We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.”
Here’s a different way of understanding it. Any lovers of nature? Can you imagine this scenario? You’ve taken a sunset walk on the beach. You’ve collected some beautiful shells, taken in the majestic, crashing waves and seen a rainbow of colors stretch across the sky. When asked to describe the evening, this is your response, “Well, it was fairly beautiful. I just wish the clam shells wouldn’t have had so many lines on them. They would be so much more beautiful all smooth. I wish the waves would have had a little bigger curve to them. I mean, they kept rolling in, but they seemed a little flat to me. The sunset was lovely, but I think it would have been more beautiful with a little more pink on the clouds.”
Kind of crazy, right? Yet, this is the dialogue that frequently goes on in our own heads when asked if we know we are beautiful. You may have just had this dialogue when I asked you to aim your camera at your face. The same God who created the stars, who created the sunset, the seashells and the waves and called them good; He created you and called you beautiful, a masterpiece, his finest work.
God wants us to have a deep understanding that we are his beautiful daughters so we can walk in confidence into any situation. Knowing we are loved and knowing we are beautiful removes our need to change ourselves to please others. It gives us the freedom to walk out our purpose for God’s glory.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
God created each of us with a unique purpose to go along with our unique beauty. I don’t understand it, but God wants us to help him save the world. There are people only you can reach. Your ability to see their need and reach them where they are is directly related to your ability to keep your eyes on God and off your own problems or failings. We have to allow God to fill up our holes and heal our wounds, in order to not only have a life of fulfillment, but to be a blessing to others.
I used to cling to my tragedies like trophies on a wall. I thought, if only people could know what I’ve been through, then they would understand me. God showed me very clearly that I had to break that wall of tragedy trophies down in order to move forward. They weren’t doing anyone any good and they were holding me back.
God has a unique purpose for you that will use all that you’ve been through, everything you are, and all that you can be. If you are willing to keep your face to his face, He will take you on the greatest adventure! He will fulfill the desires of your heart and you will have the opportunity to reach behind you to bring others along.
You are deeply loved. You are a stunning masterpiece. You have a unique and crucial purpose.
Go enjoy the freedom of these truths!!
